The session was over. Just as I was having my breakthrough, we were done. Sniffling as I accepted the Kleenex from Dr. Clark, I dabbed my eyes then blew my nose.

“Aw, man, if I didn’t have a two o’clock I’d extend this session,” Dr. Clark groaned while looking at the watch on her right arm. “I’ll tell you what—I have a homework assignment for you both,” she stated as Carter pulled me into him, kissing the top of my head. “I want you to focus on what drew you to each other and what locked you in—Meaning, the first time you laid eyes on one another, what was it that intrigued you? And when was the moment that you realized you could spend the rest of your lives together?”

“So, what—Do we do what we used to do when we first met and started dating?” Carter asked as Dr. Smith smiled.

“Exactly—Do what you used to do when you first started dating… That means movie dates, dinner, whatever it was you did during the wooing stage of your relationship,” she explained. “And when you come back, next week, we can work on the parenting part of your relationship.”

Swallowing, as I lifted my head from Carter’s chest, I wasn’t looking forward to next week. This Jewel episode got a little too real for my liking.

“I’ll see you next week,” Dr. Clark stood up with her hand extended, like she did every time our sessions ended. “And you remember what I said… None of what your mother did to you or made you do is your fault—Even though Fatima was used as the scapegoat… Mental and emotional abuse is still abuse.”

“Okay,” was all I could say as I shook Dr. Clark’s hand and stepped to the side so that Carter could do the same.

Leaving the clinic with a different feeling than I’d came in with spoke volumes to what Carter tried explaining on the day he brought me in. He right to bring me here. Dr. Clark understood me and she was the perfect medium to all my problems. The catalyst for renewed life or a stress-free one.

“You want somethin’ to eat?” Carter asked as he helped me into his truck. “You sure?” He said when I shook my head, declining his offer.

“Yeah,” I exhaled, clicking my seatbelt on. “I’ll just make a sandwich or something, when we get home,” I told him as he nodded, closing my door.

“I’ll just take us home and we’ll get the kids later,” he told me while starting up the truck.

And I didn’t disagree because I needed to sleep this off and afterwards, take a shower, too.
